Nigeria's remarkable new Museum of West African Art (Mowaa) has landed in the middle of regional political struggles during the period it was expected to – but was unable – to begin operations to the general public for the very first time.

The Ambitious Project

The large-scale complex stands in the heart of Benin's urban center, capital of the southern region of Edo – and features an archaeological dig and structures created by celebrated British-Ghanaian architect Sir David Adjaye, most famous for the National Museum of African American History and Culture that was inaugurated in Washington in 2016.

It has been half a decade in the development – and is designed to showcase both the past and the present of artistic expression in the locale famous for the historic artworks, historical pieces stolen from the king's palace by British soldiers in the nineteenth century.

Setup and Prospects

It is notable – and prior to the planned opening, Mowaa was buzzing with workers committed to show it is a place that can match renowned museums and galleries in the Europe and America.

Within conservators carefully unwrapped art pieces from secure wrapping, examining each piece and taking detailed documentation before placing them on display surfaces and plinths.

Technicians calibrated temperature regulation systems. In the scientific facility, officers calibrated instruments designed to maintain ancient artefacts.

Financial Backing and Economic Vision

The initiative has been the concept of businessman Phillip Ihenacho – presently Mowaa's chief executive.

"I want us to have a significant financial effect on area populations in this region," he told media outlets, adding that he aspired to make Benin City "a cultural destination."

Mowaa, a charitable national foundation, envisions itself generating in excess of 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and providing more than $80m each year to the area arts sector through collaborations and programming.
