In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
