Chelsea Boss Maresca Dismisses Manchester City Speculation as Pure Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded recent reports linking him with a move to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The Italian manager, who once served as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, responded to the ongoing rumours surrounding his future.
Maresca, named Chelsea boss in June 2024, has a contract that runs until 2029, with a possible extra year available.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is no time for these kind of things."
He went on to explain, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I have stated many times, is just about this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to a role in Italy with Juventus. So I don't pay attention because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, currently sitting in fourth position in the top flight, are set to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a lunchtime kick-off.
Tensions Following Previous Comments
Maresca's latest statement come in the wake of he referred to a recent two-day spell as his most difficult since joining Chelsea.
Those original remarks had fueled widespread talk of a possible disagreement between the manager and the club's key decision-makers.
When pressed if he had since spoken with the club's leadership, Maresca replied, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about various topics. But about the post-Everton press conference, no."
The manager however affirmed he would "absolutely" remain at the club for the coming campaign and urged supporters to keep backing the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that injured attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return sooner than expected, possibly in contention for a fixture against Aston Villa later this month.
Analysis: An 'Open Wound'
The perceived disconnect between Maresca and the club's hierarchy remains as an open wound that continues to cause concern.
While there has been no deepening of the situation in the open, there has also been no apology offered, creating the disagreement unresolved.
The atmosphere during the manager's press conferences has grown increasingly strained, leading to concerns it could undermine what has otherwise been a decent beginning to the season.
Chelsea's sporting situation is strong: they are in the top four in the Premier League, have qualified for the League Cup semi-finals, and can achieve a better European draw with good performances in their remaining games.
